The Legion currently has limited meeting and
recreation facilities that are presently utilized by the legion in its
official capacity and as a dance hall on Saturday nights to raise the
necessary funds for routine maintenance.
Continuing the tribute to those that paid the
ultimate price for freedom as well as veterans who returned from the
battlefield to make the United States a force for peace and prosperity
throughout the world.
Although the Legion is in need of major
renovation, the structural integrity of the building is amazing, thanks to
the craftsmanship of skilled masons, carpenters, and steel workers from
Graves County’s past.
The showpiece of the building once known as the
“Pearl of the Purchase,” is the theater. The current restoration plans involve major renovations to the
theater level that would enable it to serve as a facility to be used by
local schools, churches, and community groups for assemblies as well as for
potential concerts and public events.
Due to the fact that the building was
constructed in the early 20th century, accessibility is limited
in most cases to stairways.Proposed improvements such as handicapped accessibility will be a
mandatory part of the restoration process.
The stage in its present form has an orchestra
pit as well as plenty of room for large scale productions and
programs.The restoration project
will modernize the facilities to accommodate the needs of local school and
community groups and potentially attract traveling companies.
